It was like piecing together a jigsaw a little bit, or a surrealist game, where you never quite knew what was coming or going with all these things floating across the airwaves and landing. And it was thrilling, like an exquisite cadaver game, when you open everything out and see what the picture is when it all comes together. I don’t think we could possibly have done it in the same way if we hadn’t been locked down and didn’t each have hours on our own to fiddle with things—it was this kind of black hole that we filled.
